The Inspiration
This was an experiment with computer modelling and physical materials like fabric, strings and wooden staff to understand the concept of tensile structures. Frei Otto was an expert in tensile structures. This structure in Cologne, called the Tanzbrunnen Pavilion is the inspiration for this project. Starting with trying to replicate the actual pavilion and iteratively changing the design was the challenge. Using Rhino and Grasshopper, the entire program was made parametric. Frei Otto’s pavilion is a symmetric decagon structure and our final design was an asymmetric double octagonal structural plan. Physical models were made for each iteration to test the tensile strength of different materials and to check the physical parametricism created by changing the angles and heights of the poles used.
