Perforated Cloth

Summary

(School Project) Design a perforated patterned object using the techniques learned in class.

Process: Using a colorful texture, I wanted to create a perforated cloth pattern. First I created the flower pattern in Photoshop with the pen tool, using the lines created by the pen tool as my guide. With that layer locked, I used the elliptical marquee tool to create a small circle in the center of the design, which I then filled in with black. Using copy and paste, I replicated this filled area multiple times across 2 of the connecting lines, creating an evenly spaced outlined petal. In order to create a full flower, I then grouped all of the filled circles together, copied and pasted them 3 times, and arranged them around the center circle. Next I created a negative of this by selecting the space around the circular shapes (command + click layer thumbnails then inverse the selection). Filling in a new layer with black, I was left with this pattern:
I defined this pattern and added it to a pattern overlay on the colored texture with 100% opacity, screen blend mode, and scaled at 149%. After decreasing the fill opacity slider in the blending options and converting it to a smart object, I also added bevel & emboss layer style with Inner bevel style, Chisel Hard technique, 1% depth, 4px size, 6px soften, 120 degree angle, 30 degree altitude, 75% highlight mode opacity with linear dodge blend mode, and 75 shadow mode opacity with multiply blend mode. I then added a satin overlay to add some more contrast to the texture—multiply blend mode, 10% opacity, 90 degree angle, 4px distance, and 139px size. And then texture (under bevel & emboss) with 100% scale, +100% depth and a wrinkles pattern.

Over top of this layer I added a textured cloth, giving the design some added depth and make it look more like cloth. Before adding the cloth, I edited it in Photoshop in order to add more contrast to it (adjusted levels and also removed the color). After adding it to my patterned texture file, I gave this layer an overlay blend mode and brought the opacity down to 75%. I then displaced the cloth image on top of the colored texture to add subtle distortions to the perforations on the contours of the texture.

Next I created a paint brush to make it look as if my initials were stitched into the bottom left hand corner of the cloth. In order to create the pattern, I created a new Photoshop document, used the pencil tool to fill in the pixels with black, creating an X shape, then created a new pattern. Using white, I sized the brush, adjusted the presets for the spacing and then painted my initials.
