I chose this letter because the project criteria called for us to choose a back that we like and design a drop cap using the first letter of the artist’s last name. The book I chose is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. So, the letter for my drop cap is “C”. Using a list of words that corresponded with the novel I start to craft themes for my drop cap design. In the novel, a Shepard from Spain named Santiago is on a search for treasure that he sees in his dreams that is located in Egypt by the great pyramids. I wanted the theme to represent this goal in reaching the pyramids on the search for gold, glory, and greatness. I started with preliminary sketches of “C” mockups. I researched ancient gold coins from Spain to use as inspirations for shapes and lines within my design. Using all these elements I created the final version of my drop cap design.
