It is now possible to control the amplitude and frequency of any of these sounds. And give to it rhythms within or beyond the reach of the imagination

Overtones
A overtone is any frequency higher than the fundamental frequency of a sound. Using the model of Fourier analysis, the fundamental and the overtones together are called partials, harmonics, or more precisely, Harmonic Partials.

We are using characters/letters/symbols/patterns to represent tones.
e.g. Different letter has different pronunciations, durations, etc.
We could know the tones via reading them(the representations out) out.
