This work is a monoprint, a unique print created by mixing linocut and monotype techniques. The darkness that often accompanies printmaking, both in terms of value and of subject matter, is what draws me most to the media. I love the richness of black ink, and I have found it's simplicity to be a great catalyst for creation. Naturally, I have been deeply influenced by Kathe Kollwitz and other German Expressionists, especially when it comes to printmaking and other drawing techniques.
Kwade Monoprint, 18"x24", mixed linocut and monotype techniques in oil-based ink on paper, May 2014
Like everything I do, I started this piece with a contour.

From the contour, I began planning and drawing out the lines I saw in the face. This phase included a lot of photocopying as I tested line quality & placement.
Thanks for viewing!
