Cinderella: Steampunk!

For our second assignment in my Introduction to Illustration class we were prompted to create an interior illustration for an existing form of literature; so long as it followed the events of the story we were allowed some artistic license to make it as creative as possible.

I decided to go with the tale of Cinderella with a steampunk-type twist. I had two ideas in thumbnails that looked promising, so I finished both. The first was the iconic scene of the appearance of the Fairy Godmother.
I wanted the Fairy Godmother to appear mechanical, to enhance the steampunk aspects of the style. I gave her a doll-like face without taking away the 'lifeness' of the figure making it appear even more magical. As an extra touch I included a clock belt that counts down til midnight when the magic is to cease.
A full page spread of what the illustration would look like in book form.
The second was a simple vignette describing Cinderella's day to day routine being told what to do around the house for her Stepmother and Stepsisters.
Bonus: Ugly Stepsisters concept!
