LC2 is an exploration based on premise that human perception can be altered or tweaked to provide expressions more suitable to the intended design; it focuses on challenging the materials to redefine themselves and understanding manufacturing of the same.

The methodology starts with selection of material. The chosen material is concrete. Possible forms and limits of the material were studied.

Next step resulted in selecting an existing form in the same material. The selected form is Stephan Zwicky’s interpretation of the famous LC2 chair.

Attributes pertaining the visual form, appeal, weight, experience and manufacturing technique were observed; assignment demanding that I change all of them without actually changing the form or its character.

Initial explorations looked at transforming the sub-form to pique visual interest and draw it away from the majesties of the other form. However, this drastically changed the character of the chair. Later explorations focused on the form alone, but that too, was not satisfactory.

The final concept. To make the entire form feel light, it is hung precariously onto smooth continuous metal rods on either side, each independent of the other, with reinforcement bars being a part of the main structure. The entire form has been made like a shell, with thicker side areas to accommodate the connecting members. Minor draft angle and cautious fillets add to the effect.

To finish the look, the steel rods are buffed and polished, and the concrete surfacing has been explored. It can be etched randomly, stamped or polished, all giving similar yet different expressions, all contrary to the original expression whilst retaining the majesty and heritage of the form.
