This new open space is surrounded by locally-important buildings, including a library by Basil Spence. Developed in consultation with the local community, the concept weaves together the cultural and recreational needs of Camden’s diverse neighbourhood, celebrating its reputation for fostering the arts.
The design centres on a sculpted landform and a sunken ball court, it strives to be empty when active and active when empty.
A central water feature is designed for play as well as visual delight. Angled jets emit arcing streams and a thin sheet of water courses down a sloping granite plane in the softly-stepped, sculpted grass banks. A shallow pool at the park’s northern end can be drained to reveal a paved surface for hosting cultural events.
