While in Japan, I visited many amazing places. One that really resonated with me was a paper museum in Gifu. Since their major export is paper, residents have found many innovative ways to utilize it. Stores are lined with paper socks, sweaters, wallets and even dresses. However, some have taken a more artistic approach combining intricate 3D paper structures with light. I was stunned by the elegance that these two simple mediums could produce together.
I created this sculpture as a response to the beautiful work I saw there. It is made out of hand made Japanese paper and natural wood. Through this piece I hope to translate my amazement with their techniques to people who will probably never have the opportunity to witness the beauty and creativity I did while in Gifu.
