Taste of the South End Rebranding

I was hired to rebrand the Taste of the South End event for 2015. Here's the final approved logo.
Here's the logo in a few variations for 1-color, knockout, and black & white usage.
I found a great old map of the south end in 1838 that I loved and gave me a nice texture to play with under the logo type. Sadly, after an exhaustive search for a hi-res version of the map, I decided to bite the bullet and just recreate it in vector. The original map is on the left, with my new vector version on the right. Even though it was pretty tedious to recreate, it's ideal for this project because the logo has many opportunities to be printed on a large scale.
With this project I wanted to tie together the logo with the neighborhood it's honoring, and also remind people that it's a charity event for a good cause and with a history.  I had always liked the original logo (on the top) and it's simplicity, so I used the same color, which helped for continuity and recognition of the brand.
I had a lot of fun coming up with a bunch of different directions for the logo. I really the liked light post version because one of my favorite charms of the South End are the oldschool lanterns lining the streets that still use gas to light them.
