Hawaiian Shirt-Personal Freedom

When faced with the challenge of figuring out a design for the theme "personal freedom" on our first project, in Digital Design for the Art and Design Foundation program, at George Brown; I started by reading up on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, to decide on the size and scope of the concept. When realizing extensive research would take quite a bit of time, to truly deliberate what personal freedom meant to me, I decided to try a different method; to draw the first thing I thought of, even though, it may not have been, as in-depth, yet simply something fun and quirky, instead.

I found, I already had the necessary knowledge, to think of an interesting design, representing my stance on "personal freedom," in a fun and quirky representation.
Combined with the challenge, of not knowing how to use any illustrator tools, and needing to come up with something decent; I tried to think in my range of abilities, with general tools found in most digital graphic programs to start, such as using circular shapes and the "pencil tool," while learning how to use "layers" and the "mesh tool" to add more of a 3D look. In not succeeding at a 3D design, my "trial and error" approach, resulted in a somewhat random pattern, with rectangular splotches of yellow, which seemed to actually have an interesting placement, that I rather liked.

The colours chosen, were to emulate the theme of a Hawaiian Shirt and use fun, vibrant colours, the way you would feel in Hawaii, for example. Looking over the final design, perhaps a contemporary lighter pastel blue and white, might have worked well, with a contrasting darker blue.
After my first "crash-project" in illustrator, and realizing a proactive and fun attitude, helps to make a difference in creativity; I am looking forward to our next project.
