THE STORY OF PICLE
CLIENT: MADE BY MANY
FORMAT: APP PROMO (1 X 4 MINS APPROX)

Alex Harding is the inventor of Picle, an IOS app that allows you to take
a picture and record a sound at the same time. These individual Picles
can then be put together as a story and played back together. It’s a way
of digitally pickling your memories.

Alex works for Made by Many (madebymany.com), an agency based
along the Regents Canal in London where they make apps, social
products and networked services for the web and mobile.

Alex had the inspiration for Picle during a Bank holiday visit to the
quirky little seaside town of Broadstairs on the English Kent coast. To
tell the story and promote the app at the South by Southwest festival in
Austin, Texas Paul Wyatt chose to have Alex front the film and take him
and the audience on a trip to Broadstairs to revisit the roots of his
inspiration. This low key approach proved effective as Alex’s easy going
charm and the quintessentially English feel of the film was the perfect
tonic to the overly slick approach adopted by other app promotional
films.

The film became a social video success story with over 20,000 views
and 140 likes on Vimeo within two days of it being released. The app
received over 40,000 downloads in the same space of time.
The Story of Picle was featured on The New Yorker’s blog and on
Forbes.com as well as being embedded on dozens of websites,
twitter feeds and tech blogs. It was also played on the American TV
series Right This Minute.
