From my degree show I was approached by Salt Road and commissioned as an Early Careers Graduate for the Outrider Exhibition which responded to Alfred Watkins' photographs and bee keeping book collection held in Hereford Library. My role was to create the printed promotional materials to accompany the exhibition.
Part of The Alfred Watkins Collection (All books belong to Hereford Library)
As part of the project I was fortunate enough to spend the day researching the collection with the artists which was incredible. The books were beautiful and featured a wonderful balance of elaborate, decorative typography and crisp and concise design.

One piece which really stuck with me was this insert from the collection as it had such a clean layout that would not have looked out of place in modern design. After meeting with the Salt Road team it was decided that the heritage of the collection should be heavily reflected in the design of the posters and invitations and this became my starting point.
I opted for an off white background and honey coloured border to reflect the age and appearance of many of the books in the collection and used Gill Sans as my main body font. I added the bee silhouette as a feature inspired by many of the page decorations which were in the books of the collection. Finally I managed to restore a library stamp which I had found in one of the books and overlay it onto the poster to give the impression we had taken the page from the library book.
