Carmen I. Medeiros's profile

Let Me Count the Waves

I designed the poster shown below for a friend's baby shower. This friend had fallen in love with the colors, imagery and style of another poster I had designed titled "Making Waves", and she asked me to create something similar to be used as a poster/guestbook at her event. For the past few years, my friend has happily called the U.S. state of Rhode Island her home, so along with a sailboat (a common sight in R.I.), I included a light blue outline map of the "Ocean State" in the background. I decreased the opacity of the map until it blended in comfortably with the light blue of the sky, thus preventing the map from drawing attention away from the objects in the foreground. Originally, I chose the typeface Tenderness for all of the text, but I didn't think it was very eye-catching, so I used Cookie Regular for the second line to create contrast and to reflect the movement of the waves. I felt this made for a much more interesting visual experience.

Early sketch. The idea to include the sun was scrapped in favor of leaving plenty of space for the text and map.
Earlier version using one typeface for all of the text.
Finished poster on display at the party.
