Magazine Re-design

Magazine Redesign
In 1946, writer and activist Mulk Raj Anand, established MARG (Modern Architectural Research Group) in India, just as the country was about to gain independence. For the past 75 years, our magazine and books have served as a platform for cutting-edge studies.

Temples is a part of 4 Readers Series, during my course of internship I recreated it keeping in mind Mars simplicity and subtlety .
Layout:

Upon finalizing my grid, much of the initial confusion dissipated. Two grid systems were opted : one for the section intros and another for the chapters. During layout design, I prioritized arranging textual content within the designated space and then incorporated images into the layout. Established rule : no text would exceed the grid area, including captions, which were seamlessly integrated into the body text. Only images extended beyond the grid, adhering to the margins assigned.

Colours :

Introduction of  more vibrant and attention-grabbing colors to create visual breaks within the magazine, and also give my own touch to it. This approach aimed to prevent readers from becoming bored or overwhelmed with excessive information.
Challenges:

1. Managing excessive text content.
2. Deciding between redesigning in my unique style or adhering to Marg’s simplicity.
3. Grappling with the concept of negative space.
4. Struggling to establish a consistent grid.
5. Distracted by the existing magazine design style, which inhibited further exploration.

Breakthroughs:

1. Gained insight into why and how white space is employed in the current magazine, mainly through margin spacing and bigger font sizes.
2. Studied various magazine layouts to comprehend the distribution of space.
3. Carefully selected a suitable grid.
