Pomegranate Primary Research - 5

Inspired by what Kate Lebo said in her book of fruits, I started off my primary research by smashing a pomegranate on a stone floor. I took photos of said pomegranate from multiple angles making sure to get all the details I could. I enjoyed this process as I got to see first hand just how beautiful the pomegranate is. However, I did see the grotesque side to things when I noticed the pomegranate’s juice looked awfully similar to splattered blood. Once I started seeing it as something a bit more sinister I became more fascinated with its symbolism.
I decided to draw from the photos I took in order to fully grasp the shape of the pomegranate un-opened and smashed. I also wanted to become aware of all the textures you can find within the pomegranate.
I really enjoyed this process as I found there to be multiple different compositions and certain details I could zoom in on. I feel with this task that I got better the more I drew the pomegranate, I started to understand how to shade it, where it has sharp edges, where it is smooth and the composition of the seeds inside.
