In this project I combined frame by frame animation (using Krita) with shading and VFX in After Effects.
Below I briefly describe the process and stages of the production.
In the first stages of the animation I established primary motion and timing of the animation. Creating the design and drawing a rough animation.
After the first keyframes are created, the outlines are drawn on top of the rough design. In both stages I used onion skin method to keep the consistency of the animation.
Lastly, I worked on in-betweens - the frames that come between the keyframes.
Then comes the cleanup - time to refine and clean up the drawings. After that - coloring, compositing and smears.
Smears are blurs that are used to convey rapid movement or action. Sort of a motion blur.
In this final stage, all the elements of the animation are combined together, including backgrounds, characters, and special effects.
