Surreal Interior Design with Adobe Substance

Surreal Interior Design with Adobe Substance team

MUE Studio partnered with the Adobe Substance 3D team to explore the relationship between 2D and 3D artwork. We would lay out an initial concept in their distinctive, tranquil style, modeling and lighting the scene. The Adobe team would thereafter use the Substance 3D toolset to fine-tune textures and add a range of elements, imbuing the scene with new character.

Our goal with this project was to provide overall art direction to the Substance 3D team, who would then work on creating the textures and fine details required. We wanted the overall scene to have an interesting interior environment, featuring foreground, midground, and background elements.
PROCESS

This collaboration had two separate stages. First, Mue Studio came up with the original concept for the scene, including objects, layout, and camera frame. Then, the Substance 3D team compiled some of our existing works to serve as a reference, to provide a general direction

After this, the Substance 3D team took all the 3D assets that we’d created and brought them to life by adding more detailed textures in Substance 3D Painter. They also used Substance 3D Modeler to create the chairs, table, and the ceramic mug. They also set up the lighting and rendered this work.
Our goal with our artwork is to create a space that we’ve never seen in reality, but that might yet be discovered. Somewhere that has a vast view of nature, where you can simply sit down to watch the sunset and sunrise. These times of day evoke subtle emotions, the types of melancholy and mysterious sensations that we want to bring into our scene. More technically, sunrise and sunset give us the opportunity to effectively use soft, directional lighting and, because the sky during these times presents a full spectrum of colors with various details, we can create a more interesting image overall.

To be more technical, utilizing soft and directional lighting in the scene is often best presented when you bring in sunrise or sunset. The elements of sunrise and sunset include subtle emotions, melancholy, and mysterious feelings which are all intentional experiences we want in our scene. Also, because the sky at the time of sunrise and sunset presents a full spectrum of colors with various details, it creates a more interesting image for the viewers. From the psychological context, both sunrise and sunset represent the cycle of nature, combining both human and non-human living. These are the reasons we are attracted to our current creative direction, in order to provoke more feelings through these colors, tones, and compositions.
