On Saturday 10th December 2011, 50,000 people took the streets to protest against the alleged fixing of recent elections in favour of Vladimir Putin's United Russia party. In the days leading up to the protest, there were smaller demonstrations which led to numerous targeted arrests and as such the build up to the large demonstration at Bolotnaya Ploshchad was marked by anxiety. As a gesture of peaceful and honest protest, many people wore white ribbons, clothing or carried white flowers. To the surprise of many, the demonstration passed peacefully and was even reported on state TV. I drew some of the people that I saw at Bolotnaya Ploshchad, which you can see here.
