Expressive Poster: Typography

The purpose of this assignment was to create an expressive poster using typography that effectively highlights an important, impactful, or meaningful life event.

I decided to focus my project on panic attacks. Over half of Americans will deal with some form of depression, anxiety, or panic disorders in their life. This project was meant to give others insight into the chaotic and overwhelming nature and shed a light on the importance of taking care of your mental health.

This project visually describes the visceral experience of panic attacks through expressive typography. By harnessing the dynamic interplay of CMYK colors reminiscent of television static distortion bars, it conveys the tumultuous nature of the disorder, where thoughts and emotions blur and blend together in a cacophony of chaos. The choice of gritty fonts such as Battery Park and Dico Typewriter serve to amplify the intensity of the theme, mirroring the raw, unfiltered nature of panic attacks themselves. Each jagged edge or dissolving stroke symbolizes the unpredictability and unease that characterize the lived experience of panic attacks.Through deliberate design choices and close attention to detail, it immerses the viewer in the disorienting world of panic.

This project serves not only as a creative expression but also as a platform for dialogue and understanding surrounding mental health. Ultimately, it is an exploration of the human experience, challenging perceptions and sparking conversations about the complexities of mental health in today’s society.
Research
Above (left to right): My initial notes on thoughts, feelings, and colors associated with panic attacks; as an additional part of my research, I wanted to find information on how others experience panic attacks and anxiety, as well as possible causes and symptoms.
Process
Above: Initial thumbnails for idea design (last thumbnail is the chosen direction for the poster).
Above: The image above (obtained from Google images) served as inspiration for how layout was approached for my background text. I wanted to capture the vivid colors, as well as the chaotic and overwhelming pattern.
