OpenAI previously launched the ChatGPT desktop plug-in, but it did not achieve significant growth. Founder Sam Altman said in HE Tuber an interview that ChatGPT will not release a follow-up plug-in soon because judging from the actual market situation, the plug-in currently does not meet the product and market fit.
Perhaps due to the setback of desktop plug-ins, the focus on mobile scenarios has become OpenAI’s main move in the past month.

It was launched on the Apple App Store on May 18 and has been continuously updated with 6 minor versions so far. Compared with the web version of ChatGPT, the App version in the mobile ecosystem obviously works harder, and of course the benefits are obvious.
First, let’s look at the traffic ceiling. According to the global Internet traffic distribution survey released by the ExplodingTopics data service provider in June, users from mobile devices currently contribute nearly 55% of global website traffic.
This means that the mobile ecosystem can quickly raise the traffic ceiling for ChatGPT’s large-scale model enclosure movement.

Secondly, there are more users to reach. Data shows that about 92.3% of users use mobile phones to access the Internet; only 65.6% use more traditional laptops or desktops.
Finally, according to regional divisions, the development of mobile ecology will also help ChatGPT further expand its large model capabilities by leveraging the higher penetration of mobile Internet.
Currently, ChatGPT's large model users are mainly distributed in developed countries such as the United States and Japan. For most developing countries such as Africa and Asia, the penetration and usage of mobile devices is much higher than that of desktop devices.

According to overseas media estimates, after the Android version launch, with the high penetration rate of the mobile ecosystem, ChatGPT can theoretically cover 86.29% of the world's population.
However, due to the more mature closed-loop ecosystem of software and hardware on the mobile terminal, the current progress of ChatGPT’s App version can hardly be said to be smooth.
According to public reports, on the day it went online, Apple announced restrictions on the use of ChatGPT and other external AI tools within the company. The document states that Apple is concerned that employees using external programs "may be exposing confidential data."

Even so, seizing the mobile scene is still a key step in the large model enclosure movement. Several manufacturers are trying to launch smaller versions of large models that can run on mobile phones.
Taking Google as an example, the new generation large language model PaLM 2 released has four versions, from small to large, they are Gecko, Otter, Biso and Unicorn. Among them, Gecko can run on mobile phones and is fast enough to work normally even without the Internet.
Baidu in China has released its first smartphone, which is positioned as a learning machine for teenagers. It is centered on Wen Xinyiyan and equipped with a large AI learning model, claiming to be a new species of smartphone.
