Klov Lamps
Klov is a pair of lamps that explores the depths of expanding foam, capturing the material in its purest state to bring a delightful surprise. When illuminated, Klov unveils a concealed world of textures and a dynamic spectrum of colours, delivering a captivating visual experience.
Incorporating colour into foam:
Our investigation involves incorporating colour into the originally white expanding foam, where we first explored adding pigments and investigated its reaction to foam. This includes the use of different types of paint mediums such as acrylic, wall and oil paints.
Illuminating foam with coloured light:
However, we also observed an intriguing property of expanding foam when its kept pure white, which is its ability to reflect light and translucency. Different forms create different light qualities, from which we observed that expanding foam produces the most unexpected shades when paired with blue light. With that we saw an opportunity to create a lamp using the expanding foam material and focused on how we can produce a wider shade range with just white foam.

form explorations
Light Theory.
Comparing two foam brands, the Selley's foam brand creates an unexpected reddish shade when placed under blue light. This can be attributed to additive lighting where the combination of red, green and blue lights creates various intensities and range of other colours.
Final Form Ideations:
Upon grasping the correlation between expanding foam and its response to blue light, we ventured into an exploration of diverse shapes and textures to elicit the most captivating and surprising colour variations. Ultimately, a clove-like configuration emerged as the optimal choice due to its incorporation of ridges and a curved surface, harmonising a blend of smoothness and porosity that results in an intriguing interplay of light and colour.

When unlit, Klov retains its pure white colour in contrast to when it's lit, where the colour range produced by the lamps ranges from a salmon pink colour to magenta and blue.
