History of The Essex Street Market

Essex Street Market History Display
History Display inside the Essex Street Market describing the rise of public markets on the
Lower East Side. Originating from rows
of pushcart vendors operated by the neighborhood's mostly Jewish immigrant population,
then growing into a large public market with
the rise of supermarkets all over the country

In 1940, Essex Street Market opened as part of a larger network of public markets that brought New York City’s street peddlers indoors. For more than 75 years, the Market has been a cornerstone of the Lower East Side community, and continues to serve this diverse neighborhood with a wide variety of products from all over the world.

2018
NEW LOCATION, SAME MARKET
In the fall of 2018, Essex Street Market will move to a new home on the ground floor of Essex Crossing, a multi-use development project that will transform the Lower East Side with 1.9 million square feet of residential, commercial and community space over the next decade.

Though in a new space, Essex Street Market will remain a public market, allowing vendors to continue serving residents – both old and new – with both affordable and specialty foods. All vendors in the current location will be making the move to Essex Crossing, presenting a unique and exciting opportunity to be a part.
