Concept and Design created by Amanda Gall
Luscious Lansdowne was part of a project including the City of Toronto, Open City Projects and OCAD University where students were asked to beautify a neighbourhood.  My design team chose a tired community in the west end of Toronto.  Using ethnographic research techniques our team got to some very interesting conclusions about the state of this neighbourhood and discovered several key design problems as a result.  I chose to focus on a transportation issue at a high traffic intersection. The key design problems I identified in the area were:elderly people used this specific stop, long waiting periods between buses, poor lighting, lack of seating, hazardous sidewalks and dying trees.  I designed a unique waiting area that included ergonomic under footing that is easily replaceable when degrading and added additional seating using a planter that would potentially grow with the tree. And it would be environmentally responsible to boot!
above is my design solution to beautify this neighbourhood.
Our design team staked out at this location and took not=es, photographs etc collecting user data
we spoke with users of this space and created several personas which enabled us to draw more conclusive evidence for our designs.  above is one example of a persona
our team covered all of the sensory impacts of the space we were surveying.  above is an example of a chart we created to organize that information.
this is a map of activity we surveyed during our visual and ethnographic observation.  each colour and shape is another layer which adds to the complexity of this neighbourhood.
