Sanatana Dharma

An image of a sculpture at a temple at Kashi or Varanasi. This image represents one of the fundamental premises of the Hindu way of life, also known as Sanatana Dharma or the Universal Law. The image essentially shows two individuals, one absorbed in asceticism and meditation, the other with a pestle, grinding a paste to consume as an intoxicating. These are referred to a yogi and bhogi respectively. The HIndu way of life essentially states that the ultimate purpose of life is mukti or liberation. For an individual, the only purpose is to attain that, it doesn't matter how. Through asceticism or intoxication, somehow get there. This is why many aspects of Hinduism are crafted in specific ways. For example, even festivals, like Mahashivratri, for instance are meant to be used as a spiritual tool and not merely as a chance for a holiday.
