 MAE JEMISON BOOK COVER
This illustration was created for an assignment with University of Hartford’s Illustration MFA program. The prompt was to illustrate a book cover for a biography about a prominent figure between the years 1980-2000. I chose to illustrate Mae Jemison who is known for being the first black female astronaut. In addition to her time in space, Jemison is also an engineer, physician, and she encourages youth to pursue careers in STEM, specifically in agricultural sciences.
I began with thumbnails and reference images. A requirement for this project was to choose a variety of artists to be inspired by. I chose the illustrators Victo Ngai, Raul Colon, and David Wiesner. I was drawn to their treatment of night scenes and starry skies.
I created a final wrap around dust jacket for this project, utilizing the stars and planets to create a pattern.
