For the Healing of the Nations: Part II

"Marveling at the perfection of that leaf, I was reminded that aesthetic beauty is as much about how and whether you look as what you see. From the quark to the supernova, the wonders do not cease. It is our attentiveness that is in short supply, our ability and willingness to do the work that awe requires.”

- John Greene, The Anthropocene Reviewed
I keep waiting for my ongoing fascination with leaves to sputter out, but for whatever reason, I still find myself totally enamored by how delicate, how intricate, and how gorgeous these little guys are.
(And I was delighted to find that John Green and I are apparently on the same page.)

I started this drawing in early June, back when the first few little leaves were poking out of the trees in my neighborhood, and I am finally finishing it now, it early October, as the leaves are turning color and tumbling to the ground - a beautiful, perfect cycle of life, beauty, and death.
When the world is cold and senseless and filled with violence and I wonder where this is all headed, I watch the leaves blanket the ground in brilliant orange and red and meditate on one of my favorite passages from the Book of Revelations:

“...On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.
No longer will there be a curse upon anything.
For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads.”
