Imagine an industrial worker back in 1970s Estonia. She finishes her day job at Punane Kunda – a cement factory located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. But as she promised her comrades, by tomorrow she’ll produce dozens of souvenir pennant flags for the upcoming sports event with the workers of the Aseri brick factory. Luckily, she has the whole family helping her during the night shift. The thing is, she’s making them in a DIY silkscreen printing technique without photo emulsion and developing process, using mainly paper and a scalpel. The protagonist in this story is Aimur’s grandma who, as it turns out, is the original graphic designer in their family. This is what led to Trafarett – a strangely familiar stencil-plate-inspired type family.
Trafarett has three versions: Stencil, Frame, and Shadow (a.k.a. “low-res sunset”); all with corresponding ZigZag Italics, in Thin and Thick weights – 12 styles in total. The whole package also comes bundled as a variable font, giving you many bonus options for choosing intermediate versions between the axes of defined extrema. All the styles share the same spacing to encourage intertwined usage.
