GOLDEN EAGLE | above the fire

ABOVE THE FIRE

I was commissioned by the aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft to shoot one of their Diamond DA-42 Twin Stars over our erupting volcano in Iceland.

Air-to-air photography is always tricky. Add an erupting volcano and a short time frame due to air space restrictions and it definitely doesn't get any simpler. The goal was to capture the golden airplane flying over and around the volcano from a few different angles in just a few rounds. We wanted to show the size of the crater without pulling the focus away from the plane. After a couple of test rounds to get our distance down it was time to start shooting. During shoots like these, many things have to align to get the shots you want and moments of opportunity only last a second. That's why communication is key, both between you and your pilot and between the pilots themselves. I was super impressed by my own pilot's ability to maneuver our good old Cessna 172 to my requests and by both the pilots for how well they managed to align the planes with regards to the volcano. Here's a few of the images from the shoot. What a day.
