I wanted the poster to include a cracked phone as an homage to his journey in the music industry. His phone is an important piece to the start of his career, as he used to make his songs on Garageband. Since then, he has made numerous musical achievements and now has his phone displayed in the Smithsonian Museum.

So my first idea was to make the poster into a phone and the information would be displayed on the notes app. The notes app had to look old, like IPhone 6 old. I grabbed this reference photo to go off of.
Example of the notes app look I was going for.
So I made a close replica.
I didn't like the outcome. Turns out, referencing something that wasn't aesthetically pleasing in the first place doesn't make the end result any better.

I also had trouble with the logistics of it. When writing something in the notes app, the date changes to when you currently write something. So in turn, my idea for cleverly displaying the date and time didn't make sense and was a bit convoluted.
Nonetheless, I pushed on and included this asset inside a phone. The cracked texture on top came from a broken phone that I scanned in. Afterwards, I illustrated the cracked phone frame.

I didn't appreciate the way this was heading and decided to change the composition of it. I first experimented with some custom type but it wasn't added to the final poster.
Custom type not in the final poster.
Once I changed the layout of things, I felt like it was going somewhere.
I scrapped the notes app idea and made the screen black. I duplicated the phone and made but a halftone affect on it. I then placed it around the poster to give it an interesting texture. I went back to my mood board and used one of the colors. I loved how it made it pop! After this, I continued to push it.
Final Poster
In this final poster, I duplicated his name multiple times in the background to add more of that bright color I loved. Instead of the phone being in the middle, I sized it up and placed it towards the corner.

The halftones and the Steve Lacy type worked to make this sort of graffiti grunge look. Overall, this was an incredibly fun project. If I were to revisit it, I would change the information type to a different font.
