Chernobyl (TV Series) artwork
I did this simply to flush out an idea I thought was interesting and to accompany my submission for what I thought was the best show for 2020...an internal office discussion. I posted the artwork above for coworkers to guess what it was, then I gave them the animation below without the red explanation text.

Why I chose the show I did:

I first wanted to watch the show because Jared Harris is a main character. I greatly admire his acting, and in this show he does so brilliantly. The show brings up memories from the past ... I remember watching the news as a kid of the event ... and sometimes I gravitate toward shows that do this. I love the Netflix show, Stranger Things, for this same reason. I chose Chernobyl as my top pick for 2020 for many reasons. It is full of tension, sadness and humanity. It shows the complexity of relationships (perhaps a bit overly dramatized in the show compared to reality, but still) and reminds us of the remarkable power we possess and the humility we must have when dealing with such power. It highlights the fragility of human life, especially relating to things we cannot physically see. The viewer deeply feels the frustration and tension that secrets, lies and rivalry cause. The cinematography (grittiness, lighting, texture, shots), set design, costumes, and minute details of the era and country are fantastic.

The only downside to the show is the occasional inaccurate portrayal of the science behind what was happening. Some of this, though, could still be shrouded in mystery since certain specific details are still unknown to the public. For example the single-savior character played by Emily Watson (whose acting was also fantastic) in reality was a combination of many scientists and experts. In the show she is portrayed as a mega-genius who figures out everything at a greatly accelerated pace with so many unknowns when in reality many people took part in solving the numerous extreme challenges of the disaster.

BELOW is an animated explanation of the design.
