Company:

Clients/Funders:
Cameroon Ministry of Public Health, PEPFAR, CDC, NACC, UCSF

Team:
Jembi Product Owner, Software Engineers, UX Designer

My Role:
UX Designer, Front-end Developer
ABOUT THE PROJECT

Jembi was awarded funding to design and develop an EMRS (Electronic Medical Record System) for the Cameroon Ministry of Public Health. It would eventually replace the paper-based processes used in their health facilities. It aimed to help reduce the spread of HIV by improving the monitoring of patient treatments. This was being achieved by multi-disciplinary teams in India, South Africa and Cameroon creating custom implementations of open source Bahmni, OpenMRS, OpenELIS and OpenERP.
WHAT I DID

I was situated on the product team as the UX Designer where I employed various UX methods to improve the usability and user interface design of the software being developed. I also assisted with the front-end development in their Agile environment.

Journey Mapping
AIM

Document the current clinical workflow at a specific health facility to reveal any gaps in our understanding.
APPROACH

Created a journey map reflecting the paper-based process for the Clinical HIV flow.

•  3 day time-frame allocated
PROCESS

•  Remote Skype interview with a clinician based in Cameroon
•  Creation of a proto-persona
•  Analysis of interview outputs and creation of journey map
•  Presented findings to the product owner
RESULTS AND METRICS

Creative design work, presentation of insights to the product owner. The insights gained from the journey map highlighted potential pitfalls and  revealed opportunities for improving the user experience.

Moderated Usability Testing
AIM

Test the usability of a clinical workflow using the new system.
APPROACH

Perform a remote usability test.

•  2 day time-frame allocated
PROCESS

•  Researched the system
•  Gathered information on the users
•  Identified the core areas required for testing
•  Identified tasks and validated them with the PO
•  Planning of the usability test
•  Performed usability test with a clinician and mock-patient (PO)
•  Feedback session with PO to identify core areas of concern
RESULTS AND METRICS

Reviewed the data with the product owner to identify areas for optimization. The insights gained from the usability test were all fed directly back into the product resulting in immediate positive impact.

Usability Test Planning
AIM

At the end of the 1st delivery cycle, UAT and usability testing of 5 core sections were scheduled to be performed by myself and an assistant in Cameroon.
APPROACH

This would include 5 tests over 5 days and the users were recruited by UCSF.

•  10 day time-frame allocated.
PROCESS

•  Researched the location, culture, language and constraints
•  Planning of usability tests
•  Coordinated plans as I was not going to make it to the venue
•  Prepared all tests to be performed by other facilitators
•  Performed dry-runs of each test
•  Prepared test sheets, observation sheets, and gathered all tools for performing tests
RESULTS AND METRICS

Unfortunately my visa did not get processed in time and the tests had to be performed without me.
