Rough Landing
9" x 12" gouache on paper.
I've been teaching myself the use of gouache over the last couple of years. Mostly just when I have spare time between other projects. This piece is definitely the most elaborate one I've done to date. It is such an unusual paint medium. It can be transparent like watercolor, or straight out of the tube it is extremely opaque and lays down on the surface very flatly. It also can be reactivated more completely by adding water back into it. This means it very easy to mix colors right on the page, or even wipe off whole sections of the painting. It also means that it is difficult to make small changes. You can lightly glaze another color on top of the paint that is already there, but if you touch it again you will mix those colors and change more than you plan.
