Anti-government protests in Lima- Peru, 2023

In the months of January and February, multiple protests took place in the streets of Lima, the Peruvian capital, in opposition to the government of President Dina Boluarte and in rejection of the excessive police abuse exercised in the protests carried out in different provinces of Peru which left 58 dead among adolescents and adults. Protestants and delegations from different provinces arrived in Lima to start the day of protests called The Take of Lima, or March of the four suyos, to make their voices heard. Demonstrators marched around the streets of downtown Lima in order to reach the Congress of the Republic; however, they were held by the police a few blocks from the congress, unleashing violent clashes that lasted from the afternoon until night, leaving many injured between police and protesters. The Peruvian police made excessive use of force by indiscriminately using tear gas bombs even when the protests were held peacefully and with the excessive use of pellets which were aimed at the body and without taking into account the distance, leaving hundreds wounded.
