BECOMING

Artist Statement
The philosophy of becoming is described as a "transition towards an embodiment of the desired change which will demonstrate a transformative movement”. The concept was born by the philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus. He stated that “nothing in this world is constant except change or becoming.”
Bearing that in mind, my artwork is an investigation of the human identity and its constant ‘becoming,’ and changing state. Establishing this concept off my own personal growth this past year alone, I decided to delineate it (using the previously mentioned philosophy) by illustrating the metamorphosis of a butterfly.
Across cultures butterflies are associated with allegories of change and transformation. The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a cocoon, emerging as a butterfly, symbolically imitates the human capability to travel from one state, and way of life to another.
