Quadre Catres
Thesite is located in France within the region known as Bacalan, situated in the north-eastern part of Bordeaux, 3 km from the city centre. The project focuses on thearea in the vicinity of Bassin à Flot; a 200 m long enclosed waterway, connected to the river Garonne by two shortnavigable channels, delimited by locks. These, including the submarine penbunker and two dry docks, are remnants of the Italian submarine activity duringWorld War II. At present it is a partly neglected harbour area with old buildings and industrial remains. However there is still a lot ofactivity in the area; people use the marina for storing, keeping and repairingboats. The bunker hosts concerts and exhibitions as well as different types ofart collectives.
Until recently, the area has been dominated by harbour functions, industry and storage facilities, but withdeindustrialization these functions are disappearing. With the completion ofthe new Bacalan Bastide Bridge across the river Garonne in 2012, urbandensification of the area is to be expected. It is upon these changing urban qualities,that this project is based.
