Virgin of the Hecantontapyliani

A rare replica of the authentic icon of Paros

The present icon, one of the most beautiful of the whole Christian world of the Aegean Sea, is placed on the chancel screen, at the left of the Beautiful Gate, in the historic church of Hecatontapyliani of the island of Paros.

The Madonna, dating from the 17th century and portrayed in bust holding the Infant, is almost completely covered – except of the faces of the Virgin and Christ – with silverwork of rare craftsmanship. The silver decoration, both on the icon and on its wonderful frame depicting 33 religious scenes, was accomplished in Bucharest in 1788. It is the work of the Greek silversmith from Constantinople Demosthenes Dimitriades, dedicated to the church by Nikolaos Mavroghenis, a noble native of Paros, being at the time Hegemon of Moldava and Valachia.

Faithfully reproduced in fine silver 1.000° with 24-carat gold plated details, this stunning icon is a unique collectible work of religious art.
