Tellus II - The wine box that morphs into an insect hotel

Tellus was born from the idea of creating a reforming packaging; a sustainable wine box that morphs into an insect hotel. The main objective of the project is to give a second life to traditional wine packaging and, at the same time, help insects by offering them a refuge through the packaging transformed into a hotel.

Bees are key to ecosystems and humans. It is estimated that one third of human food depends on pollination by insects, including bees, as well as a considerable number of plant-based medicines. Pollinators therefore play a key role in nature, of which we are often unaware.

Climate change is causing a decline in the world's bee population: rising temperatures and extreme natural phenomena, low and irregular rainfall, the spread of pathologies that damage bees or invasive species such as the Asian wasp, and a decrease in flowering and in the food content of pollen.

Tellus is an eco-friendly business model that offers innovative packaging with dual functionality: the purpose of the packaging is to protect the product (bottles of wine) and, at the same time, to be a hotel for bees in danger of extinction. The box allows you to preserve a bottle of local and organic wine while serving as a refuge for insects located at the customer's house or at the nearby Tellus communities that every costumer can find with the QR code inside the box.

The exterior of the dimension is cured with solid wood that preserves the hotel from meteorological adversities. The interior is an arrangement of bamboo canes, ideal for the comfort of the insects.

Final render of the Tellus communities.

The structure of the box allows connection between boxes of the same category to generate large communities to strengthen the protection of the species.

These communities can be placed in the users’ private garden or in natural locations suggested by a scannable QR code inside the box, which indicates to the user the nearest Tellus community.

This is the second version of Tellus, a conceptual project made in 2022 at the graphic design degree at Ramon Llull University.
