Portraits in a Saree

A photo series inspired by my sister's body positivity journey. Her growth from being insecure about how she looked and what others thought, to now finally embracing and loving herself for who she is and not letting people's opinions affect her.
Growing up my sister was always conscious of the clothes she wore. With all the voices telling her she was not thin enough for a 15-year-old, shorts, skirts, sleeveless and sarees became her enemies.
In order to avoid the so-called well-wishers, she decided to cover every inch of her body even on a scorching summer day. Long Kurtas that hid her thighs and track pants that concealed her curves became her best friends.
Even though at first she didn’t let the comments get to her, eventually, she let the burden sink her into the sea of insecurities.
And suddenly the voices were no longer just external. That’s when she knew she had to get out of it. She focused on fighting the voices on the inside. And not letting the ones on the outside affect her anymore.
She started to open herself to things she couldn’t enjoy as a little girl. Saree being one of them, she decided to get her own and embrace it without the fear of opinions and voices coming her way.
Loving herself for who she is has been her number-one goal lately.
Although it’s been a constant battle that she has to fight, I see her trying and winning it every day.
