This film had total 4 characters, and the combined rushes of all the characters were over 2 hours. A lot of safety takes were taken just in case.
I shortlisted 3 best takes from each shot for each character, this elimination process cut down the clips from 2 hours to 30 minutes.
This was the first draft of the film. I had made it in such a way that it finishes before the 45 seconds mark, but the problem was the feel of the film was missing. The brand acknowledged the problem, and removed the time restriction.
This is the final timeline of the film you saw above, there were a lot of changes. Music was changed. Takes were changed, Voice overs were changed. This made me realize that creative process is a very different journey. It is not as simple as it seems, we have to keep a lot of things in mind while making a cut. Sometimes, client's changes are good, sometimes, they are not reasonable at all, but at the end of the day, it is client's video, and they have paid for the production, so it is natural for them to give changes, and natural for me to incorporate them, because this is what we, as video editors do. We do not edit videos, we give client a video editing experience, because they will remember the experience, not the output.
