Layering Space
Project Statement
The Layering Space assignment required creating an exaggerated sense of depth through paper layering techniques. I created two assignment responses because I was unsatisfied with the first outcome. For this second iteration, I was inspired by memories of swimming in lakes as a child and the creatures that I imagined beneath the surface. This piece pays homage to one creature in particular – the catfish, who swims among native plants. I created space not only with layering, but with negative space, which you can see in the Frogbit plants that sit on the surface of the water. My final composition uses elements of space and value as well as principles of movement, unity, and proportion to create a piece that pays homage to the lakes of my childhood.
