Strawberry Vale School, New Extension

This project was the final presentation in my Arch 403 studio course in Washington State University. The project was designing an extension to the Strawberry Vale School in British Columbia. Based on course syllabus the studio had four exercise. The first  was practicing a new approach for drawing and annotation by choosing an sport and analyzing it’s movement by drawing and annotation. In this section I chose figure skating. The second was understanding the existing building, Strawberry Vale School, which asked students to decipher a tender set. The third phase was architectural design of the new extension. And finally the last phase was construction documents. Most of the documents in this concise presentation are from the third phase.

As for the requirements of the program we were asked to consider sustainability in the architectural design. In addition, we had to consider movabilty of the architectural elements along with interactivity of the architecture for kids. The goal was educating kids  with these elements. The program asked for four classrooms, one sport space and one additional space. The additional space in my project is a transparent pavilion which would be a multi function space for both kids and other memebers of the community. Also, my basic philosophy was engaging the community in the new extension.

Architectural Design Elements Diagram
This new extention to the Strawberry Vale School has five main design elements incluing: A) A deck wich starts from existing building and follows to the upstairs of the class B) Four classes C) A Pavilion which is a space for game in doing art works D) Gym E) The upper space of the classes which is a semi-open space would be used in different ways and finally F) The folded roof which covers all of other activities.

Architectural Design Concept Diagrams
The design process of this project has two phase including 1) Programatic concepts 2) Architectural design conpects. These four diagram illustarte how four basic concepts (duet between buildings, priority, orientation and sequential flow) have been translated into the architectura design concepts.
These four concepts are in response to what the program asks for the new extension design. In addition, I tried to consider my other concerns like sustainability and my design values.

DESIGN PROCESS
This concept map illustrates notions or conceots which have been considered during the design process of the project. Based on the structure that professors asked for the design process I chose figure skating as my sport. Therefore, I tried to study the movements and easthetics of the pair figure skating. Eventually, I came up with the concepts like “Delicacy” or “Fludity” . This map shows how I inspired by these notion in the architectural design process.

Section C-C

Delicay of the architectural elemnts of this project was one of the major concepts. This notion not only was considered in the articulation of the design elements and the quality of spaces but also has been realized in the strucural design including strucural elements and joints. In general the structure is as light and delicate as possible. Therefore, instead of having a formal structure, hight-tech methods like using steel cable or structural glazing were considered. In this page some of the drawings of the structural design demonstrate these eefort to reach such qualities.
