Magazine Design Project - "Up North"

Project Brief - "Up North" Magazine Project

Niche: Travel, Local, New England

Audience: Those that live in New England states looking for local places to visit or those from out of state that want to travel to New England for the fall.

Topics: Fall leaves changing, hiking spots, apple-picking, breweries, scenery, etc.

Summary:
I want my magazing to be travel focused, local, and about spots to visit in New England. This won't just be about spots to visit but also activities to do there. With fall starting, I'm thinking about a fall-focused theme with articles/scenery of leaves changing, spots to hike, places to go for apple picking, breweries to go to, and scenic spots. I want it to have a more modern/fun/adventurous feel to it. I want this to be a magazine that young adults or adults would grab and see some fun places to oor activities to do with friends. I'm thinking of creating a more clean-cut and contemporary take on New England with the feel of this magazine. I want it to definitely be fall inspired.

Title / Taglines:
- New England Now - "The new, New England"
- Locale - "Be Inspired by New England"
- Hidden Travel - "The Best Spots to Visit"
- Up North - "Beautiful New England"
- New England Adventure - "Find What's Out There"
- Local Life - "Discover New England"
Brainstorming:
I started by brainstorming an idea and topic for my magazine with titles and taglines. I researched my audience, topics I wanted to cover and wrote up a project summmary. I did this by looking at other travel magazine covers and finding the color palette and typeface I would like to use for this project.
I next gathered inspirational imagery, typeface, and color schemes for my magazine. I researched similiar travel magazine and found a fall color scheme I wanted to work with. I created a moodboard to map out the elements that would help bring my magazine to life.
I next grathered images and their sources for my magazine. I found images of breweries and apple orchards for my fall, New Hampshire travel magazine.
I then found articles I'd like to include that fit into the fall, New Hampshire travel theme. I organized them and cited the source for 3 articles.
Once I had my magazine title and tagline, I started to brainstorm what my magazine cover would look like. I drew out 25 unique sketches of how I wanted my magazine cover to look. I played around with different typefaces, layouts, and designs. Next I narrowed down my sketches to 3 concise and clear cover designs.
For the 3 magazine covers I narrowed down, I sketeched out the typeface, imagery, and layout.
After sketching out my magazine covers, I turned the 3 narrowed down sketches into digital magazine covers in InDesign with text elements and the photography I was thinking about using.
Next, I created a final version of my magazine cover, added in a table of contents, multiple articles, and a back cover ad for travel. Below is the final project after working with colleagues through multiple rounds of edits.
Overall, this project strengthened my typography, design layout, ad design and InDesign skills to complete a robust magazine that resignates with a topic I love.
