World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Draws Attention

Dixie Park is the first woman to hold elected responsibilities as judge of the Stark County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas’ Probate Division. Having handled numerous guardianship and eldercare cases, Judge Dixie Park supports events such as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Representing a collaboration between the World Health Organization and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, WEAAD frames elder abuse as both a human rights issue and a matter of public health. As a call to action, it shines a spotlight on often undocumented cases of exploitation and neglect of the elderly.
WEAAAD provides a host of informational resources, many centered on contributing factors to such abuse. Common issues include physical weakness, which allows one partner to exert control over the other, as well as cognitive impairment and dementia. In addition, caregivers may have a level of control over those they assist that results in dependence and unbalanced power dynamics.
Preventing elder abuse starts with vigilance and being attuned to the signs that something is wrong. Staying connected with older relatives and acquaintances, and allowing them to express themselves in conversation, is another important aspect of prevention.
The WEADD site notes that an Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116) can provide trusted referrals for care services in the local area, while long-term care ombudsmen act as advocates for those who reside in nursing homes and other facilities for the elderly. Public professionals are also tasked with roles as “mandated reporters,” whose duty is to report suspected elder abuse cases to the proper authorities.
