Hand Forged Cutlass

I was fortunate enough to take a welding class and for my final project I hand forged a cutlass, something I have wanted to do since I was 8.
Top: Inital blade, unfortunately a crack developed in the steel so I had to start over.
Middle: Final blade
Bottom: Pieces for the guard and a template of the final shape
Blade rough polished before heat treating
Blade heat treated and sharpeded!
Assembled sword. Still in progress, I am going to do a steel wire wrap around the base of the blade as well as a leather handle once I find some suitably aged leather. My goal was to create something that looked old, used. Maybe it fell off a ship and washed ashore, or maybe it was left in an attic for decades. Extremely happy with my progress!

Hand Forged Cutlass

I made my very own cutlass. I wanted something that looked old, and I am very pleased with the result!
