In 2019, I had access to different vegetable fibres, among the the bora (water haycynth) and the moriche. I used these fibres along with cotton yarn to create woven pieces. I also experimented with different dyeing methods using natural dyes.

En 2019, tuve acceso a distintas fibras vegetales, entre ellas la bora y el moriche. Utilicé estas fibras para realizar tejidos junto con estambre. También experimenté con distintas formas de teñido utilizando materiales naturales.
I first wanted to experiment using plain moriche and different types of cotton yarn, trying out patterns (in this case, you can see I was trying out the "chevron" and "twill" patterns in the yellow and green rows).

Primero quize experimentar usando el moriche y distintos tipos de hilos de algodón, tambien experimentando con patrones (en este caso, el "chevron" y el "twill", visible en los hilos verdes y amarillos).
Moriche is very receptive to dyeing, and turned out to be the perfect material to try different types of natural dye.
In the above image to the left, undyed moriche is depicted. On the right, you can see different types of fibres dyed using campeche. The moriche, in the middle, is the most vividly dyed.

El moriche es muy dado al tinte, y resultó el material perfecto para probar distintos colorantes naturales.
En la imagen de la izquierda, se puede ver el moriche natural, sin teñir. En la imagen de la derecha, se pueden ver distintas fibras teñidas utilizando el campeche. El moriche, la fibra del medio, es donde se vé más vivo la tonalidad morada de este tinte tradicional.
It was this quality that motivated me to experiment even more with this fiber.
One example of a natural dye I used while experiment is depicted on the right: Anthemis Tinctoria, or Yellow Camomille.
The left picture depicts a technique called "solar dyeing". This techinque involves placing the fibre and dye in a mason jar filled with water and fixing agent. This jar is then put in a place where it recieves direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time, weeks or even months.
In this instance, I used silk paper as the dyeing agent. This generated an incredibly interesting effect where the color wasn't homogenious, but instead was variegated.

Esta cualidad me animó a experimentar todavía más con esta fibra.
En la derecha, se puede ver un ejemplo de uno de los tintes naturales que utilizé en mi experimentación: Anthemis Tinctoria, o la Camomila Amarilla.
En la izquierda se puede ver una técnica de teñido llamada "teñido solar". En esta técnica, colocas la fibra y el tinte en una jarra transparente junto con agua y el fijador. Esta jarra la colocas al sol y la dejas un tiempo prolongado, semanas o hasta meses.
En este caso, utilicé papel de seda como tinte. Esto generó un efecto increiblemente interesante, donde el color no es liso sino matizado.
Here is a sample of the different dyes used and their effect on the moriche. From left to right, there is cúrcuma, blue silk paper, eucalyptus, and campeche.
I used all of these dyed fibers to create a piece inspired by the Ávila mountain.

Aquí se puede ver una muestra de los distintos tintes y su efecto en el moriche. De izquierda a derecha, esta la cúrcuma, el papel de seda azul, el eucalipto, y el campeche.
Utilicé todas estas piezas teñidas para hacer una pieza inspirada por el Ávila.
I also had the opportunity to work with another fiber aside from moriche called Bora. This fiber is the root of the water haycynth, an invasive aquatic plant species.
Although it isn't very receptive to dyes, it is beautiful in itself. I used it for this piece called "Techo y Estrellas" ("Roof and Stars").

Además de moriche, también tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con la Bora. Esta fibra es la raiz del hacinto de agua, que es una especie de planta acuatica invasiva.
Aunque no coge bien el tinte, la fibra en si es muy hermosa. La utilizé en esta pieza titulada "Techo y Estrellas".
