Concept & Objectives

This poster was inspired the comic book style paired with 80s color and feel. I love both superhero movie tracks and 80s music, so combining the two became a great appeal, thought it was not my original idea.
Sketching Process

I began heavily sketching based on some band names I already had in mind. The three I was drawn to were "Hannah and The Heartbreakers", "The Diehannahs", and "Sasquatch in The City." This had me inspired to go for a more 50s feel with a trio shown or a classic mic as the center of the poster. I even experimented with a pinup girl with a zombie look to really stretch the idea in different directions. I was pretty satisfied with my sketches and headed to Illustrator.
Draft

As I was deciding where to start, I thought of a vibe that I had when I was Black Widow for Halloween. I remember taking a picture of myself in a hero pose and wanted to see if I could recreate it in comedy book form. This helped me to ignore the band names I was so focused on and be creative with my former experience. I was happily pleased with how the silhouette turned out and decided to add some highlights to give it more detail.

I took advice from my peers to play around with the colors a bit more because I knew I needed more contrast. I needed to also create a layout to eventually add a band name and the information while tying it all together.
Final

I lowered the brightness of some of the colors and added a black background which helped create greater value contrast. I settled on the band HEARTBREAKER. It shows a strong female presence that has no problem defending herself. I think this is a great improvement from the draft and the colors compliment each other well. I tied the band name to the POW effects and the information beneath to the old fashion 3D effect I added to the female power pose. This project did not go in the direction I expected, but I am pleased with the result.
