Mostra Play is a film festival that in recent editions has turned its focus on electronic games in São Paulo, Brazil. In the 2021 and 2022 editions, the central theme "Play it" highlights the characteristic of games as social interfaces in pandemic times.
"These artists see and design games as art and build not only entertainment pieces but narratives that allow moments of public engagement, fun, and social enjoyment in a scenario of restrictions imposed by the pandemic", says Marília Pasculli, artistic curator of the project.
The work that Vini Fabretti created for the project is called "Super Clássicos Megamix" The project aims to capture the public's attention by observing an alleged video game match taking place on the gables. The work honors board and electronic games such as Space Invaders, Tetris, and the famous snake game, present in the collective imagination. The retro aesthetic relates to 16-bit video games like the Super Nintendo and the Mega Drive.
Vini Fabretti created an atmosphere in which people, when passing through the projections that took place around the city, could witness a match happening live, between two unknown people. A direct reference to the old habit of watching duels between two people in competitive games, which nowadays proves even stronger with the growing esports scene.
