It was the city’s first food market, and a staple of an earlier New York. The neighbourhood formed around a thriving industrial base in the late 19th century. Then, the early 20th century led to a slowdown in factory work, leaving behind the large warehouses and lofts that mark much of Tribeca’s architecture today.
