This Hanukkia is an answer to a challenge commissioned by the IDF (Israeli Defence Force) magazine "Bamahane" from design students in the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
A friend and I answered the call and our unit of choice was "Unit 8200" of the IDF Intelligence Corps.
The values that led this design were: Understatement, elegance, and secrecy.
The materials used are glass and brass.
Glass - Its transparent nature signifies the unit's inherently secret and "invisible" activity.
Brass - Has a distinct military assiciation, while also being clean and prestigeous.
The hannukiah's stance is steady and confident but being made of glass - one can't escape the feeling of brittlness and fragility of the structure. Such is the "touch and go" nature of intelligence work.
The glass is 6mm thick and was cut using a diamond-tipped glass cutter.
The Brass was turned on a lathe and then the slots were milled into it.
The fingerprints were added later as an after-thought.
(not really...)
